 Крајем јесени 2023. године на интернету су се појавиле прве информације о могућој пријатељској утакмици између репрезентације Русије и Србије. Крајем децембра Унија европских фудбалских асоцијација коначно је одобрила његово одржавање. Информацију о одобравању предстојеће утакмице од стране УЕФА потврдио је у децембру председник Руског фудбалског савеза Александар Дјуков.
